murder was a first for crime family

Sunday’s murder was a first for crime family

The city’s police brass won’t wager on it in public, but in private they admit that Bangalore may not have seen anything like this: A crime family, where a father and his six sons control a thriving criminal syndicate, Mafiosi style. Surprisingly, the Syed family, originally from Shimoga and now operating out of Koodipalaya near Kengeri, were largely invisible to the public eye.

It all changed on Sunday morning, when the youngest of the Syed brothers, Syed Akram, allegedly shot and killed Nanjundappa, a realtor who they suspected to be a police informer. Akram had 36 warrants pending against him when he committed his latest crime. “It is a family affair,” said M I Zamil, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kengeri.”They are ten males — nine brothers and their father. Of these, the father and six brothers have as many as 150 cases against them across the state.”

The cops say that Nanjudappa and Dhanraj (who were both from Shimoga) were attacked because one of the brothers was arrested following information the duo provided to the police.

CCB sources reveal that most of the time cops don’t dare enter the Syed strongholds, notably certain backstreets in Chandra layout, Vijaynagara and Goripalya. The family was primarily involved in sandalwood smuggling and vehicle theft before they branched into more lucrative, and violent, endeavors.

Now, according to sleuths of the Central Crime Branch, the Syeds are into extortion, blackmail, settling scores on behalf of politicians and realtors and, of course, murder.

The family is backed by a shadowy organization comprising hundreds of youth who swear by them. The family, an underworld source said, entice youth in the guise of providing them ‘employment’. They target youths between 18 and 20 years of age from the poor localities and train them to steal vehicles. They have reportedly stolen more than 2000 vehicles so far. The more promising among them graduate to bigger tasks.

A CCB source revealed that the Syeds get their boys to steal only brand new vehicles. They are so professional that they immediately change the chassis number of the vehicles to obliterate all traces of the theft. Occasionally, they even get the original documents of the stolen vehicles changed right at the RTO office that issued them in the first place! A pointer to how far their reach extends.

ROOTS IN SHIMOGA
The family came to Bangalore about a decade ago. Of the nine brothers, two of them reportedly work overseas and one is deceased. The remaining six brothers - Syed Nihal, Syed Mansoor, Syed Rashid, Syed Nasir, Syed Irfan and Syed Akram (who is the youngest at 34) - and their father Syed Rashid run their criminal empire.

There are also rumors about a case against Akram’s mother Safrunnissa. Among the six brothers, Syed Nihal (45) is currently cooling his heels behind bars for more than year now. He was arrested for stealing cars.

The father, who is 70-plus, is no longer as active as he used to be. His sons are the ones in control. Akram himself is on the run after Sunday’s murder, and is believed to have fled to UP. Even if the police nab him, sources say, it would hardly be the end of Akram’s career.

In fact, CCB officials revealed that the Syeds have a lawyer based out of Shimoga who works ONLY for them. Moreover, this lawyer specializes in filing Habeas Corpus (unlawful detention) petitions claiming human rights violations against his clients whenever the police close in on them.

Another sign of how sophisticated this crime family is, is the manner they have gone about indulging in charitable ventures to cover their tracks and build a wider system of patronage. They have built a community hall in Shimoga and regularly give contributions to the poor and needy, a CCB official said.

serial killers

Bangalore serial killers arrested
The Tumkur rural police have finally announced the arrest of two serial killers, including a woman, on Sunday for their involvement in the murder of 11 sex workers.
The accused have been identified as Prema, alias Shantha, 38, a resident of RT Nagar and native of Theerthahalli in Shimoga district and Raghavendra, alias Raghu, 27, resident of Anchepalya and native of Varamballi, Hosanagar taluk in Shimoga.
DNA was the first to report about the arrest of the serial killer, Raghu, on April 15. The Tumkur Rural police had arrested Raghavendra and his aunt, Prema, on Sunday. Both the accused confessed to killing 11 sex-workers between March 23, 2010 and November 15, 2010, with the intention of robbing them. The police said that Prema and Raghu killed the women with the help of another person, identified as Sundaresh, who is yet to be arrested.
The Tumkur police got on the trail of the two serial killers when they formed a team to solve murder cases involving women. And it was the photo of a dead woman, later identified as Lakhsmidevi, 42, who had gone missing from Sanjayanagar, that helped the police to nab the two in Tumkur.
Police said that they had identified six sex-workers so far and are trying to establish the identity of more women. Police said that all 11 women were from Bangalore. The accused have been sent to police custody for seven more days.

Umesh Reddy

It's death for ripper Umesh Reddy

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence of former police constable Umesh Reddy, alias B A Umesh, and known as `Jack the Ripper', who was convicted of the gruesome rape and murder of a widow in Bangalore 12 years ago. It said the manner of committing the offence brings it within the category of "rarest of rare" cases.
A bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and A K Pathak refused to show any leniency to the convict, who had raped and smothered the victim after tying her hands behind her. Her son, then 8 years old, was witness to the crime, and had given evidence.
The Supreme Court judges said: "We are satisfied that the extreme depravity with which the offences were committed, and the merciless manner in which death was inflicted on the victim, brings it within the category of rarest of rare cases, which merits the death penalty," the court said.
Umesh Reddy was earlier convicted by a division bench of the Karnataka High Court on October 4, 2007, on the charge of rape and murder of Jayashree Maradi Subbaiah, a widow, on February 28, 1998, in Peenya. But the judges had differed on the quantum of sentence -- while Justice V G Sabhahit confirmed the lower court's order imposing death penalty, Justice Ravi B Naik differed with it by saying death penalty as a deterrent has failed to curb crime, and modified the lower court's order to RI for life, with no scope for amnesty under any circumstances.
The
City Fast Track Court
had convicted Umesh Reddy on October 26, 2006, and had imposed death penalty for rape and murder of Jayashree. Police had arrested him on March 2, 1998.

The Supreme Court also took into consideration that the convict was a habitual offender who was earlier convicted for various offences. "The antecedents of the appellant and his subsequent conduct indicates that he is a menace to society, and is incapable of rehabilitation. The offences committed by the appellant were neither under duress nor on provocation, and an innocent life was snuffed out by him after committing violent rape on the victim," the bench said.
Earlier, former judge of the High Court Justice S R Bannurmath, the third judge appointed to decide the fate of Umesh Reddy alias B A Umesh, had upheld the city sessions court's order imposing the death penalty.

‘Loyal’ employee caught stealing

A pharmaceutical wholesale distributor took the time-tested CCTV route to identify the insider who had stolen drugs worth around ` 20 lakh from his godown and sold them to chemists across the city at heavily discounted prices.

Bhandari runs Chamarajpet based Mahaveer Sales Corpo-ration and has ` 5 crore monthly turnover. He employs some salesmen and store-keepers. A few months ago, he found discrepancies in the stock. He complained to the Chamarajpet police who suggested fixing CCTV cameras on his premises. Bhandari followed the advice. When he checked the recordings on April 15, he realised who the culprit was. He was surprised because he had praised the youth, Nagaraj, and promoted him due to his hard work.

Bhandari summoned the 19-year-old and questioned him. The youth admitted to wrong-doing. Before Bhandari was about to hand him over to the police, Nagaraj sought permission to use the washroom. Once out of Bhandari’s sight, he fled. Bhandari informed the police who caught up with Nagaraj in his hometown, Kunigal.

When questioned by the police, Nagaraj revealed the names of his accomplices and their modus operandi. He has been in Bangalore for three years. He started applying for jobs after failing to clear his PUC. He got the job of a salesman in Mahaveer Sales Corporation. He worked very hard, which got him appreciation from colleagues and Bhandari. He was promoted and put in charge of the storehouse. Around the same time, he struck a friendship with some youths who were jobless.

Seven months ago, one of the jobless youths, Jaleel, suggested that Nagaraj could make a lot of money stealing some drugs from the storehouse where even small boxes contained medicines worth anywhere between ` 50,000 to ` 1 lakh. Jaleel offered to resell the drugs. Nagaraj fell for the plan and started stealing from the storehouse. Jaleel and some others sold the drugs and shared the amount with Nagaraj.

Bhandari said, “I wanted to catch the thief. On the advice of the police, I put 10 CCTV cameras to monitor the goings-on in the storehouse. The cameras helped me catch the thief within a fortnight.”

Inspector B G Ratnakar of Chamarajapet police station said, “We advised the shop-owner to fix CCTV cameras because we suspected an insider. We picked up Nagaraj in Kunigal. We have recovered medicines worth ` 5 lakh from him.”

Cops identify serial killer, rapist

CHITRADURGA: The Chitradurga police team formed to investigate a spate of serial killings here has identified M Shankar alias Jai Shankar (33), a hardened criminal, as the killer. However, he is absconding. Shankar hails from Konasamudram in Edappadi taluk of Salem district.
The team headed by circle inspector P Ravi and PSI H V Sudarshan of Hiriyur police station who were entrusted with the case has succeeded in collecting clues after visiting several police stations in Tamil Nadu, including the organized crime intelligence unit at Salem and the regional transport office (RTO) at Sankagiri in Tamil Nadu.
Their breakthrough came from Sundaram, to whom Shankar had sold a cellphone robbed from one of his victims. The cellphone belonged to Rangaswamy, who was allegedly murdered by Shankar. Rangaswamy's wife, Marakka, was also raped and by Shankar on April 2 in Hiriyur. Through the IMEI number they traced Sundaram who gave police a rough sketch of the suspected killer. Based on his description, police showed Sundaram photographs of suspected criminals collected from the Sankagiri RTO office. He identified Shankar from one of the photographs. Marakka, too, identified him.
